This song was popularized by the Clancy brothers and has become standard fare for Irish musicians. In the 1966 publication Walton's New Treasury of Irish Songs and Ballads 2 it is attrubuted to J.M. Crofts of Dublin, but the earliest documented version is from Searsport, Maine, in 1941.
