Since 1986 Castlebay has created a body of work which celebrates Maine's maritime heritage and environment blending history, legend and experience into their personable performance style. They support their fine, expressive vocals with Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle, and woodwinds, as well as playing evocative instrumental selections, treating the audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic.    Both Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved, sung and researched folk music since childhood. They have been recently exploring the traditional music connections between the Celtic lands, the Canadian Maretimes and Maine. These regions share in the richness of this heritage as revealed by the many variations of songs tunes and stories carried by families moving through the area by land and sea. In addition to songs passed down in their own families, Lane and Gosbee research archives and collections and interpret this music through the lens of their own cultural legacy.   The duo has also received critical praise for their original compositions, Gosbee for his finely crafted narrative ballads and Lane for her imagery and beautiful melodies. In the time-honored art of meaningful songwriting, they give new voice to an ancient tradition. Many of their songs have as themes the lives of those who live by the sea, not only the deep water sailors, but also the shipwrights, coasters, fisherman and their wives. These are the people who established Maine as a maritime legend and who continue to build that legend with their daily lives of skill, hard work and pride. In addition, their instrumental compositions form the basis for ensemble suites, a historic folk opera and video soundtracks.     Castlebay has released 35 recordings featuring both songs of the Maine coast as well as music, stories and poems in the Scottish and Irish tradition. Their most recent CD, Bound Away, contain songs from Maine's seafaring tradition gathered from archive recordings made in 1920-40.
